Why did we need an expansion?

For years, the Dr. Robert M. Fales Hospice Pavilion in Wilmington had operated at nearly 100 percent capacity. When a bed at the Fales Pavilion was not available, patients were placed on a waiting list or offered a bed at one of our other hospice care centers. That meant some families had to drive an hour or more to Whiteville or Bolivia to be with their loved one. Other patients on the waiting list may have chosen to stay in their homes, the hospital or other facilities – settings that may not have met their immediate end-of-life needs – until a bed at the Fales Pavilion became available.

Our vision

To meet the current demand and growing need for hospice care.

The Every Moment Matters Campaign added a six-room wing and updated the existing 12-bed hospice care center. Projects were completed and celebrated at a dedication ceremony in October 2014.

Our goals

falesfloorWe raised close to $3.1 million and:

  • Added a six-room wing to serve more patients in need of acute end-of-life care
  • Increased inpatient capacity by 50 percent
  • Renovated and updated the existing 12-bed Fales Pavilion

Support is Essential!

The full cost of the expansion and renovation was more than $5 million. Funds needed for construction of our hospice care centers depend on generous gifts from foundations, businesses, families and individuals. With your help we made a difference to critically ill patients and their families.

Donors like you invested in Lower Cape Fear Hospice’s mission to serve everyone touched by an advanced illness. Your gifts to the Every Moment Matters Campaign brought peace and comfort to patients, as well as to their families and loved ones. Together, we will continue to choose how our community faces life’s greatest challenges.
